In January 2005, the Department of Health issued a public consultation paper proposing a transfer of 'standard' branded generic NHS medicines from the Pharmaceutical Price Regulation Scheme (PPRS) to the arrangements for reimbursement of generic medicines.

This document provides a summary of responses and issues raised during the consultation.

The Department of Health received 74 replies to the consultation with most respondents supporting the proposals whilst expressing concern about the accurate identification of generic medicines not in Oral Solid Dose (OSD) form.

To address these concerns, the Department of Health will undertake two additional rounds of consultation. The first will seek comments on a specified list of OSD standard branded generic medicines to be removed from the PPRS. The second, for issue in 2006, will deal with the complexities associated with non-OSD medicines.
